Skype to close doors May 5th

Microsoft has announced that Skype will be retired in May 2025, with users encouraged to transition to Microsoft Teams. While this may seem like a natural evolution for some, many old-school SEOs who rely on Skype daily (/me Hi Mom!) are unlikely to make the switch. Skype has been a staple communication tool in the SEO industry for years, fostering countless client calls, mastermind groups, and collaborations. The reality is, Microsoft Teams is not highly regarded in most professional circles – and it lacks the user simplicity and efficiency that many SEO vets use Skype for (damn you ICQ!).

For SEOs, Skype has been more than just a messaging app—it has been a networking hub. Several private groups we are in use it for chat,  quick screen-sharing sessions, and an easy-to-use interface have made it a daily staple in the industry. While Microsoft assures that Teams will support chats and calls between Skype and Teams users during the transition, that doesn’t mean SEOs will embrace the shift. Many professionals have already moved to alternative messaging platforms like Discord or Slack rather than using Teams that Microsoft has attempted to force feed the masses with incessant unwanted popups, notifications, and integrations.

One of the biggest drawbacks of other all-in-one apps is complexity. SEOs don’t need calendar integrations, corporate collaboration features, or rigid team structures—they need fast, reliable messaging without friction. Skype provided exactly that, which is why its impending shutdown feels like the loss of an old friend. Microsoft claims that Teams has seen a fourfold increase in consumer usage, but let’s be honest—most of that growth has been driven by enterprise environments where Microsoft has taken a ‘no prisoners approach to insisting on Teams.

With a couple months left before Skype disappears, the question remains: where will SEOs go next? Many will likely stick with Skype until the final days, but once it’s gone, expect a migration to leaner, more agile communication tools – probably Slack. Microsoft may be betting on Teams as the future, but for the SEO community, it’s just another reason to look for better alternatives. Microsoft integration and forcing of all these options, really has me – for the first time ever – looking to *nix and Apple alternatives.
