Google Lens now processes over 20 billion visual searches every month, and new updates are making it even more accessible across apps and devices. A new feature for iPhone users allows them to search their screen in Chrome or the Google app using gestures like drawing, highlighting, or tapping. This means users can quickly perform a visual search without needing to take a screenshot or open a new tab. In Chrome, this feature is accessed via the three-dot menu under “Search Screen with Google Lens,” with a dedicated Lens icon coming soon to the address bar. The same function is available in the Google app for iOS under “Search this Screen.”
Lens has long been able to identify a vast range of objects by matching images from the web, but AI advancements are enhancing its capabilities. With new AI Overviews, Lens can now provide more context for unique or unfamiliar images without requiring a user to phrase a question. For example, if someone sees a car with an unusual hood texture, they can take a picture with Lens and instantly receive AI-powered insights along with relevant web links. This feature enhances visual search by making it easier to understand novel objects and scenarios.
These updates are rolling out this week for English-language users where AI Overviews are available, starting with the Google app for Android and iOS, and later expanding to Chrome on desktop and mobile. By integrating AI more deeply into Lens, Google is streamlining the process of searching what users see, whether it’s a product, an article, or something completely unfamiliar. These enhancements make it easier to explore and learn from the web with minimal effort.
Google claims that there are 20billion visual searches done every month. Huh?
While it sounds good in theory, actual usage is a bit of a head scratcher on mobile. Sporadic usage on desktop is a bit easier, but results seem to be all over the map. Back on mobile, I honestly can’t see the use case other than preventing a bit of typing.
