ChatGPT Search SearchGPT Goes Full Public Access

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search, initially available only to paid subscribers, was later expanded to all logged-in users. Now, it has taken another step forward by allowing anyone to use the search feature without needing to create or log into an account. This change positions ChatGPT as a more direct competitor to Google, lowering the barrier to entry and making AI-powered search more accessible to a wider audience.

Functionally, ChatGPT Search operates similarly to traditional search engines, providing quick responses and linking directly to sources within the chat interface. By default, it performs web searches to retrieve up-to-date information, but users also have the option to initiate a manual search with a dedicated button. This allows for a balance between AI-generated responses and direct access to external sources, making it a flexible tool for different types of queries.

With the removal of account requirements, OpenAI appears to be aiming for greater adoption and positioning ChatGPT as a serious contender in the search engine space, competing with Google. However, displacing Google is no small feat—Google’s dominance in search is deeply ingrained, and most users instinctively turn to it first. Even with AI-driven advancements, ChatGPT Search still faces an uphill battle against well-established competitor like Google.

Beyond search, OpenAI has been making rapid updates, including the launch of a new AI model and the introduction of Deep Research, a feature designed to enhance search capabilities. A rebranded ChatGPT logo further signals OpenAI’s efforts to strengthen its identity in the market. These developments suggest an aggressive push to innovate and capture more users, especially as competition in AI search intensifies with challengers like DeepSeek. The removal of account barriers could bring in more casual users, increasing engagement and providing OpenAI with valuable data to refine its search tools.
